Buses and trains

Bus passes

All councils are obliged to fulfill the requirements of the English National Concessionary Transport Scheme (ENCTS). This provides travel to senior citizens and some disabled people within certain criteria.

Whilst the person may travel free of charge bus companies are reimbursed by the local authority for the area where a journey commenced. Any council is able to provide a service over and above that requirement but when doing so can only offer this benefit where it is responsible for payment for example, journeys commencing within that area.

Senior bus passes

If you live in England and are of a pensionable age, you are entitled to a senior bus pass giving free travel on local buses anywhere in England. Use the link below to apply.

Disability bus passes

If you have a physical health problem or learning disability you can apply for a disability bus pass.

Disability Plus Carer

A disability +C bus pass is intended for use by anyone who cannot use public transport alone. This pass will allow the holder to travel with a companion (who must not be accompanying the person as a part of their paid employment) free of charge.

Easy Rider Wallet

Intended for the disabled the Easy Rider Wallet is bright orange with plastic pockets into which the holder can place important information, helping to make using public transport easier and making people more independent. The wallet alerts bus, taxi drivers and Paragon Interchange staff, that the holder may need assistance.

Rail passes

Rail passes, these schemes exist that allow for the Council to issue passes on behalf of rail companies to senior citizens and disabled people.

Travel Assistance

If you need help when travelling by train you can book for assistance. You can get assistance to help you with –

  • guiding you to your required platform, taxi or amenities
  • help you with any luggage
  • support you to get off and on the train
  • support to move around the train station

It is recommended that you book at least 24 hours before your journey to give the train companies time to manage your request.
